His research focuses on model selection and training under distribution shifts, with applications in medical imaging, knowledge retrieval, and image-text integration. From 2020 to 2024, Jo\u00e3o completed his PhD in the Information Science and Engineering Group at ETH Zurich under Prof. Joachim Buhmann, developing robust machine-learning methods to address bias and distribution shifts, with contributions to representation learning, image segmentation, unsupervised learning, and anomaly detection in clinical settings. He holds an integrated Master\u2019s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico, Lisbon. His undergraduate research at the Instituto de Telecomunica\u00e7\u00f5es explored clustering algorithms for biosignal processing, focusing on epileptic seizure prediction and emotion estimation in autism. Jo\u00e3o also interned at CardioID Technologies, where he developed a blood pressure monitoring prototype using PPG and ECG, and at Cleverly (acquired by Zendesk), where he contributed to data annotation.
